Defined as the development of endometrial tissue in various parts of the body primarily the uterus, endometriosis causes severe pain. The adhesions that may develop due to endometriosis can hamper the normal function of the organs. It can also cause infertility. Laparoscopic surgery endometriosisis is the most common medical procedure that is done to remove scar tissue in the uterus. As opposed to a typical surgical operation that involves a huge abdominal incision, Laparoscopic surgery or laparoscopy is done by the insertion of a laparoscope through a small incision. This is done to diagnose endometriosis and to pinpoint the exact location of the growths that need to be surgically removed.
Laparoscopic Surgery Endometriosis Reasons
However, surgeons have the discretion to add more tiny incisions if needed, perhaps to accommodate other surgical instruments. There are a couple of reasons why doctors recommend laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis. The first reason is to diagnose the internal organs for signs of endometriosis and other complications that may come with it. This procedure, as far as medical experts are concerned, is the most precise way to diagnose endometriosis. But there are times when the growths are so small that it can be difficult to detect. To be safe, it is highly recommended to get a second opinion.
The second reason for laparoscopic surgery endometriosis is to surgically remove adhesions and growths that may cause infertility and excruciating pain to the patient. Endometrioma, or the growth of an endometriosis cyst on the ovary, immediately needs to be removed.
Before laparoscopic surgery endometriosis, a patient will be prohibited from consuming food and water for at least eight hours prior to the surgical procedure. Like the majority of minor surgical operations, laparoscopic surgery endometriosis is painless. It is typically done while the patient is under general anesthesia. The person who performs the operation is usually a licensed gynecologist.
Part of the procedure for laparoscopic surgery endometriosis is to inflate the patients abdomen with carbon dioxide or nitrous oxide. The purpose of this is to make the gas create clearance in the abdominal wall. The clearance made by separating the organs from the abdominal wall lets the gynecologist see the growths more clearly. The clearance also gives way to the insertion of the laparoscope that would go through the small incision. As was mentioned earlier, additional incisions can be made to facilitate a better view of the organs.
Laparoscopic surgery endometriosis only takes 30 to 45 minutes. To remove endometriosis, there are various techniques that can be done such as excision or cutting the tissue, electrocautery, and destroying the scar tissue with a laser beam. When endometriosis has been successfully removed, the gynecologist then closes the incisions with a few stitches or depending on the size of the incisions.
Laparoscopic surgery endometriosis is usually performed in outpatient facilities and the patient is usually required to stay for a day. A week after the laparoscopic surgery endometriosis procedure, the patient can already resume his or her regular activities. However, it may take a little longer depending on the patient’s capacity and resistance. It is best to consult your physician if you are experiencing the symptoms of endometriosis.
